Day 4: Japanese vs American women

Shikai, Candice, "Japanese American Women and Activism within the JA Community: Redress, Reparations, and Gender." 07 Mar. 2008.

Quote from article:

  • "As a Japanese American woman she was expected to not make waves, and when she did by protesting the Vietnam War, her actions were received with displeasure from her family" (qtd. Shikai).
John expect every women to listen to him like his wife. But, Jane is the opposite of Akiko and therefore he doesn't like her. Jane never listen to John and would do whatever she think is right including showing the production of beef.

  • "Each woman was directly affected by the values instilled in them by their families, who through actions and tradition, taught her the importance of Japanese American cultures and values" (Shikai).
  • "She was taught what it meant to be a “good little girl,” by working hard, listening to and respecting elders, and being aware of when it is appropriate to speak out" (qtd. Shikai)
Akiko was raised to be the "good little girl", to respect her husband and avoid saying something that her husband dislike. She blame herself for what is not her fault instead of her husband. She does everything as John asked and be an obedient wife.

This is a reliable site because Discover Nikkei is formed by the Japanese American National Museum which is located at LA funded by the United States, California.

This website is suitable for me to compare the characteristic of Jane and Akiko, the American-Japanese woman and Japanese Woman.
