My Year of Meats compare women from Japan and America., Akiko and Jane. Akiko is a traditional kind of Japanese woman and Jane on the other hand is a modern American woman.
A woman should be strong and independent, making decisions on their own. Women should be respected by men and be given power in voting, status and being a leader. They should be given opportunity in education and become a leader participating in politics.
Akiko becomes strong and decided to left John after she is pregnant. She wanted to be brave for once and live her happy life. She is an example of the change of the status of women in the world. Jane, is an example of a modern woman whom did not forget her own culture. She learned to face every challenges and did not give up to prove herself right.
